What to see

Bromo is not the highest mountain in Java that honor goes to nearby Mount Semeru at 3676 m but it is probably the most famous. Bromo is actually just one of many peaks in the Tengger Caldera large, but easily recognized as part of a whole have been blown by the wind and constantly in the crater sulfur belches white smoke. The inside of the caldera, just dubbed Sand Sea (Sea of Sand) is coated with fine volcanic sand and the overall effect unsettingly loud, especially when compared to the lush green valleys all over the caldera. When the time each activity in the area, remember that the sun sets shortly after 5 PM and sunrise line beginning at around 5:30 am. This means you usually will need to get up at 3:30 am or so to get there in time of dawn.

Mount Batok (2440 m) is a brown volcanic cone at the center of the northern caldera. Unlike the other near the peak is no longer active and actually has some vegetation growing on it, most of the local pine tree that had somehow managed to survive even on volcanic ash.

Mount Bromo, edges tinged with white sulfur and always bubbling, is the major sights. To reach it on foot, take the left fork in Cemoro Lawang's solitary crossing, then head to the streets to caldera caldera and then across to the Hindu temple at the foot of the mountain. From the temple a steep path leads 250 steps to the edge of the crater and meter-wide ledge from where to not keep looking at volcanoes.

Penanjakan Mountain (2770 m), located in the north of the caldera, is a mountain top view point accessible by paved road from Tosari and hence popular with jeeps and even tour buses. Most people came to see the dawn at 5 am, and you probably will have a large concrete observation post for yourself if you arrive at a later date.

Along the road from Cemoro Lawang to Mt. Penanjakan, is the best way to get the views of the caldera without the crowds. To reach it, head west from Cemoro Lawang (past Cemero Indah) for 6 km, past farms and fields. Paved road eventually turned into a mountain path winding ended with a flight of stairs to the right, and viewpoint (with concrete shelter) is at the top. Allow 1.5 hours to climb up a steady pace, and carry the torch if you try this at night. From here, you can proceed to Mt. Penanjakan by following the trail upward, after the trail blends into the paved road to the viewpoint (total time about 60 minutes each way).
If you plan to return in the same way, marking the spot where the trail emerged into the street (if you pass a stone lantern in the street below, you have gone too far!), And notes that fall in this section can get slippery due to loose sand and stone. There are plenty of accommodation options around the mountain. Facilities Cemoro Lawang side of the caldera somewhat basic, but there are good hotels in Sukapura and Probolinggo.
