Amed

Diposkan oleh M BALI TOUR
Madeftu Bali Tour - Amed is a long coastal strip of fishing villages in East Bali.
Amed refers to a long stretch of coast running from the village of Cucik about 14 km eastwards incorporating the seven villages of Amed, Jemeluk, Bunutan, Lipah, Selang, Banyuning and Aas. The pace of life here is slow and the coastal scenery quite stunning making Amed the perfect place for a relaxed holiday in Bali.

Amed is the most recent tourist development area in Bali. It was only in 2000 that tarmac was laid on the roads. Telephone lines were installed in 2003 and it took until 2007 for a bridge to be built over a section of the main road that regularly washed away during the rainy season.

This is the most commonly used base for visitors wishing to dive the USS Liberty wreck at Tulamben and that area is also covered by this article. There are other good dive sites close at hand and a thriving dive industry has developed all the way along the coast here.

Amed's inhabitants live from fishing, salt-making and tourism. The lack of tourism-based revenue, its remote nature and the generally harsh environment for farming, meant that this area was very much one of the poorer areas in Bali. Amongst others, the East Bali Poverty Project drew attention to the plight of the local villagers in this area and that, together with recent tourist development, has gone a long way to improving general standards of living, health and education.

Amed is famous for its beaches, lined with traditional outrigger fishing boats. There is quite coarse black volcanic sand at Amed village beach. As you move further east (and away from Mount Agung), the beaches have softer sand and become more of a mid grey-brown in colour. The prettiest bays are probably those at Jemeluk and Lipah but the whole stretch of coastline is very attractive.

Salt production is a declining but still important industry in this area. As you drive along the main coast road through the villages you will see large open drying pans crusted with salt crystals. Those little boxes of gourmet Bali salt crystals you see in delis all over the world probably started their long journey from these very pans.

Most people come to Amed as a getaway, including expats from other parts of the island. It is a favourite honeymoon destination for tourists and is very popular with divers and snorkelers. Day trips to local places of interest such as the water palace at Tirta Gangga and Bali's most sacred temple, Besakih, can easily be arranged. Mount Agung with lots of trekking options is just 30 to 40 minutes from Amed.

Traditional outrigger boats are available for fishing charters from the main beaches in the Amed area. This normally involves early morning trolling for mackeral.

Have a traditional massage on the beach. Women from the local villages are always on hand for an invigorating massage, especiallly so at Lipah Beach.

Enjoy nature and go with the wind on a traditional sailing boat for diving, fishing, exploration, dolphin watching, snorkeling or just swimming and relaxing.

Amed has some good snorkeling within metres of the shore. A reef follows the majority of the coastline and is quite close in. Due to the limited number of visitors to the area, the sea life is healthy and abundant. There is a small wreck in quite shallow water off Lipah Beach. This is not the World War II "Japanese Wreck". David Pickels' book on diving in Bali described this dive site for the first time back in 1999 as the Lipah Bay Wreck, and he admitted his mistake in the meantime. Matter of the fact is that this little wreck is not located in Lipah Bay at all, but some villages further east along the coast, namely in the village of Banyuning. The dive site is locally known among the dive operators as the "Japanese Wreck". Lipah Bay is a nice snorkel spot and actually also has a small wooden wreck in only 1.5 metres of water. Best places for snorkeling are:

* Japanese Shipwreck in Banyuning, small ship at 20m from the beach, awesome corals with tons of fish
* Jemeluk, an absolute highlight with beautiful coral formations and loads of fish.
* in front of Pondok Vienna Beach in Lipah. Waters can be very rough here.
* small wooden shipwreck at Lipah Beach
* Bunutan (beautiful coral, not so many fish)
* Selang beach, in front of Good Karma Bungalows (visibility isn't always good because of strong currents)
* in front of Amed Cafe in Amed
* Liberty shipwreck at Tulamben, some of which is in water shallow enough to allow snorkeling.

Blimbingsari and Palasari

Diposkan oleh M BALI TOUR
Madeftu Bali Tour - During the Dutch colonial period a concerted effort was made to preserve, then promote certain Balinese cultural ways in order to create an attractive image for the purposes of tourism. As far as the Dutch were concerned, Catholic and Protestant missionaries didn't belong in such an image. Initially all missionaries were banned from pushing their ideas on the island but by the early 1930s, some inroads were made and a very small Christian community began to emerge.

Not surprisingly, this "new" community created tensions with both the local Hindu population and the Dutch secularists and in 1939 the colonialists decided to shift the missionaries to two very remote locations in the mountains of far West Bali. At the time there was nothing at either location and both were built from scratch — a particularly impressive achievement.

The exiles formed two communities some five kilometres apart — Blimbingsari for the Protestants and Palasari for the Catholics — over time the former developed into a missionary training centre and also home to the largest church on the island.

From the moment you enter the grand stone arch of Blimbingsari, you notice manicured grass verges, concrete flower pots every 50m and every driveway to every house concreted — everything looks so orderly and the people obviously take pride in their town. Looking further into the properties lining the road you notice beautifully maintained buildings with lush tropical gardens, crosses above the front doors and quite often a car parked in the driveway. This town is clearly more prosperous than those surrounding and it feels strangely suburban and comfortable. The centre point of Blimbingsari is the stunning Protestant church which could easily be mistaken for a Balinese Hindu temple if not for the sign out the front and a few crosses on the roof.

Palasari is further to the east of Blimbingsari along a maze of winding roads and you'll know you have taken a wrong turn when you end up at the nearby large reservoir. From here, turn back and take the first left and you'll enter Palasari village. It has a less impressive feel than Blimbingsari, but the main reason to visit is for the Catholic church which would put many a Western church to shame in terms of aesthetic appeal.

Built between 1955 and 1958 from white bricks, the church features grey Balinese accents and stone carvings and a massive steeple. Inside it is even more impressive with large wooden beams and picturesque natural lighting.

While there is no formal accommodation in either village if you really want to stay in either you should be able to arrange some kind of homestay deal. Otherwise you'll need to visit here on a daytrip from Permuteran, Gilimanuk or Medewi. If at all possible, try to visit both on a Sunday morning to take in the Church service.

The turnoff to both villages is around 25km southeast of Gilimanuk on the main coastal road. There is no regular bemo transport up and it is too far to walk, so you'll either need to have your fingers crossed for an ojek to run you up from the intersection, but better way to go there is to have your own transport, because a while you can see a lot of views of villages, rice terrace and green areas, so, you can go there with Madeftu Bali Tours.

Tulamben

Diposkan oleh M BALI TOUR
Madeftu Bali Tour - Tulamben is a small fishing village, 30km north of Amed, about 20 to 30 minutes drive. As well as local dives off the various Amed beaches, a notable attraction is diving the wreck of the USAT Liberty at Tulamben. Some divers base themselves at Tulamben itself where all of the hotels have either in-house dive operations or are allied to one or other of them.

The Liberty is a US Army transport ship torpedoed by a Japanese submarine in 1942. The wreck lies about 30 metres offshore and is absolutely covered in soft corals. A huge range of reef fish have made this their home and occasional pelagics visit as well. Some of the wreck can even be seen by snorkelers. There are other dives in the Tulamben area and keen divers will have no problem entertaining themselves for a few days in this area. One word of warning - The Liberty is a very popular dive and unless you are actually staying at Amed or Tulamben and get there early in the day, it can be very crowded indeed.

The town’s name is derived from the word batulambih, which roughly translates as “many stones” a reference to the destructive eruptions by Mount Agung that have affected this part of Bali from time to time. The modern name evolved over time, first to “Batulamben” and finally settling on the contraction Tulamben (“batu” means “stone” in Indonesian).

The wreck lies in shallow water and is considered appropriate for divers of all certification levels. The ship rests in 30 meters of water, is roughly 25 meters from shore and can be reached with a short swim from the beach. The highest point of the wreck tops out about 5 meters from the surface. The ship was torpedoed by the Japanese off the nearby Island of Lombok and the ship was towed to the beach at Tulamben for salvage operations. The 1963 eruption of Mt. Agung, which devestated much of the eastern side of Bali, drove the ship into the water just off shore, where it became encrusted with coral and a home to other sea life.

The best conditions for diving here are during October and November, when the weather is generally calm and during the start of southeast monsoon, which typically extends from May to July. In addition to a wide variety of corals and invertebrates on the wreck itself, large fish frequent the wreck in some seasons, most popularly Mola mola and whale sharks. Professional divers have praised local residents for minimizing local fishing activity.
